 Program

Deanna Cantrall
San Luis Obispo Police Department

Our program was provided  by Police Chief, Deanna Cantrell, from the SLO police department.   She spoke to us about two things, first the ASPIRE Academy for young women, and second her lessons learned about leadership.

The ASPIRE Academy is a camp for young, at-risk, women ages 13 to 17.  It is a great experience for young women that exposes them to a career that is typically dominated by men.  This year, they are partnering with Hancock college and this summer the camp will be offered in Lompoc in July.  There are 20 spots available, and they are hoping to get 10 girls from Santa Maria to participate.

Through her work, Deanna has learned four important lessons in leadership;
1) Be bold
2) Take risks
3) Be courageous
4) Be confident

She also spoke about  the importance of influence - the capacity to have an effect on the character, development, or behavior of someone else.  We need to be willing to have the tough conversations with those we mentor, and remind them that the decisions that are made about you, are made when you are not in the room.  People know you by your brand, your promise and your reputation.   You need to be mindful of all of these.

50/50 Winner
I don't remember who won the raffle, but it doesn't matter,
because the money went to the baby.
